Delivering a world-class product for the 2015 Women’s World Cup

In May 2015, 6 weeks before the start of the most popular tournament for Women’s professional soccer, we started building a fantasy mobile app for users to enjoy alongside the Women’s World Cup. With a strict deadline, our small product team worked relentlessly to deliver a world-class product.

Users would predict how each team would finish the group stage, then pick how the qualified teams would finish in the knockout portion of the competition, all for pride and prizes! We partnered with large influencers, like former Mexican National Team star Monica Gonzales and popular NWSL team Boston Breakers, to create sponsored groups that users could join and compete for special prizes.

At the start of the competition, we generated over 100,000 downloads with over 75% staying engaged throughout the tournament!

Using free t-shirts to incentive user sign ups

We encouraged users to share the app by rewarding those who referred 10 friends to sign up and create a bracket with their choice of a t-shirt I designed. The response was incredible — we spent $7000 on t-shirts which generated over 30,000 users, yielding an amazing $.23 cost/sign up.
